Six hours passed, and the pain that was rolling through Cayan was unlike anything heâd experienced before. If that was what Sanders had endured with the Inkna, Cayan had new appreciation for his trials. Shanti was still pacing, the contractions coming faster and becoming much more intense.
Despite his earlier reservations, the Womenâs Circle had actually proved invaluable. They sauntered around like all this was the most normal thing in the world. They made tea and got drinks, organized snacks for the collected helpers, and gave Shanti broth or ice chips, as she needed them. They suggested when she should go for a walk, or when she might rest, before Marc could get the words out. They shooed people away with experience, and repopulated the room when Shanti had a moment of panic that her child wouldnât make it. It was like a dance, and they were the choreographers. Even the Shumas let them lead in many ways.
âOkay, now itâs time to head to the hospital.â Marc felt Shantiâs belly. âWould you like to walk?â
âThatâs too far.â Eloise stood from her chair and motioned for Molly, who promptly pushed in a rolling chair. âShe can travel in this with Daddy by her side, and when she gets there, she can walk as much as she wants.â
Marc stared at Eloise for a moment, before stepping out of the way. âOkay.â
âThat is a solid plan.â Kallon took the handles. Molly stepped out of the way without complaint, following a nod from Eloise.
Cayan helped lower Shanti in as another wave of pain coursed through him. He tensed up, dealing with it, watching as Shanti groaned and bent in on herself. She shook her head from side to side as a sound of mortal pain escaped her.
Tendrils of fear crawled up Cayanâs spine. While it did hurt, he could bear it just fine. Heâd always assumed Shanti could handle pain like he could, but the way she was carrying on hinted that something was very wrong.
âShe is not sharing the pain like she should,â Rohnan said disapprovingly, taking her hand.
âWhat do you mean?â Cayan asked.
âShe is taking most of the pain into herself, sparing you.â Rohnan glanced at Kallon, who started pushing.
âIf something happens to me, he will need to care for the infant,â Shanti said, out of breath.
Cayan struggled to breathe. âNothing is going to happen to you, mesasha. Nothing will happen to our baby. Youâre both going to be fine.â
âShe is doing great,â Marc said. âEverything is normal.â
âTotally normal.â Molly hastened to catch up. âThis is absolutely natural. She is healthy, the baby is healthyâall good things come from hard work. A baby is no different.â
They reached the hospital and filed down a different hall than they usually visited, one for childbirth. The doctor passed by, saw the massive group of people, and visibly sighed. He walked forward to meet them. âA whole team of people for a job needing three. I should have guessed this would be high maintenance.â
Another wave of pain washed through.
